Pulses (2015)

The surgeon’s thumb nail scalpel is drawn

down the dark crease of scar tissue.

Green triplets inside the open wound

tight packed in their fur lined womb.

A schoolboy in the science lab store

looks at the specimen jars,

floating baked beans in formaldehyde;

graded, grotesque, untimely ripped.

As a child his job to tease them free

he remembers their bitter smell.

Peas were easier, uniform, sweet,

popped from the pods with a gentle squeeze.
